Different Types of LASIK Lasers

Learn About the Different Kinds of Modern Excimer LASIK Lasers

Are you undergoing LASIK Laser surgery? If you are, then you are probably aware of the different kinds of lasers they use for the procedure.
Are you afraid that you don’t know a lot when it comes to how each laser actually works? Each Excimer laser has its own pros and cons. Here’s what you should know about each one.

The Three Kinds of Excimer Lasers

1. Spot Scanning Lasers
Also known as “flying-spot” lasers, Spot Scanning Lasers are the most common type. It uses small-diameter laser beams, about 0.8 to 2mm in size. These beams are then scanned across the cornea in order to produce the ablation zone.
It is said that this approach has the ability to produce the smoothest ablations. It is also known to treat astigmatism very well.

2. Slit Scanning Lasers
Slit scanning lasers, in turn, use relatively small laser beams that are attached to a rotating device with slit holes that gradually grow larger. Though this type of laser generally produces smoother ablations when compared with broad-beam lasers, it is known to risk overcorrection.

3. Wavefront-Guided Lasers
Wavefront-guided lasers as excimers that are connected to a device that detects defects in the eye through lightwaves. Both slit scanning lasers and spot scanning lasers can be used with wavefront-guided lasers.

These are the three types of LASIK lasers available today. Before you undergo surgery, make sure you talk to your surgeon about your options. Good luck!
