Presbyopia and Lasik

Presbyopia is a natural condition of our eyes when we get older. Even if we have normal vision, we find it hard to read very small letters such as the letters in our cell phones or the words printed on restaurant’s menu. When we reach 40, our eyes naturally decrease their ability to read small prints. It is not a disease. It is part of getting old and using our eyes every day for more than 40 years. Even a person who has a normal vision– not nearsighted or farsighted– will develop presbyopia.
If you have a perfect vision and you are over 40 years old and finding it hard to read small prints, you will need reading glasses. If you are nearsighted and have eyeglasses to see far objects, you just have to remove your eyeglasses when you are reading. When you are farsighted, you need 2 separate glasses or one eyeglass with bifocals– one to focus your farsightedness and one for you to be able to read.

If you have this condition, one option is for you to have lasik laser eye surgery. Although Lasik cannot cure the condition since this is a natural condition and not an illness, Lasik can do something with your eyes so that you don’t need to wear eyeglasses. The most popular Lasik tecnique used for presbyopia is what they call the Monovision. They will set one eye to have the capacity to read small prints and the they will focus the other eye so that it can see far objects.
We cannot prevent the development of presbyopia or the decrease ability to read but with Lasik, surgeons can help you read prints such as newspapers and the restaurant’s menu without the use of eyeglasses. If you are interested to have a Lasik, you can visit a Lasik surgeon near you and find out if you are a good candidate.
